Curriculum

Asian Hope International School curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum and linked to the Cambodian National Curriculum through an integrated topic/theme approach.

In classes up to Kindergarten the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum is followed which covers six Areas of Learning:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Communication, Language and Literacy;
  • Mathematical Development;
  • Physical Development;
  • Creative Development;
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the world

Each Area of Learning is covered throughout the day and linked to the class theme e.g. ‘Animal’, ‘Ourselves’, ‘People who help us’ etc. The emphasis is on learning through play and exploration, using both inside and outside space.

Initially the focus is on developing the children's English through role-play and talk during play. The children begin to learn the English letter sounds in Kindergarten 2 through an interactive, multisensory programme called Jolly Phonics which continues throughout the school until Grade 3 providing a very firm foundation of English language skills.

An integrated topic approach to curriculum continues throughout the primary years until Grade 6. The curriculum in these years still combines elements of the English and Cambodian curriculum with Khmer increasing so that by Grade 5 the children experience half the day in each language. Six areas of learning continue from the English National Curriculum:

  • Literacy
  • Numeracy
  • Scientific and Technological Understanding
  • Understanding Physical Development
  • Understanding the Arts
  • Historical, Geographical and Social Understanding

AHIS offers a holistic education in which the whole child develops - their socio-emotional, physical, spiritual, as well as their intellectual development is important. Teachers create many learning experiences that are fun and interesting. Our hope is that the children will continue to grow and learn throughout their lives in Cambodia and beyond.
